How to organize a move in New Mexico during a global pandemic

A view of Santa Fe.

This global pandemic that we are going through right now is a very tough situation to handle not only for those who need to organize a move. The coronavirus has started to spread and take many lives all across the globe. The only way that we can stop it from spreading more is to self-isolate and distance ourselves from anything that involves socializing. This is why plenty of businesses are currently closed, there are no sporting events, and any form of social gathering is canceled. This is truly scary times we are going through especially because all of this made so many plans impossible. Because the borders are closed almost everywhere a lot of people are unable to travel or move abroad.

But moving inside the borders is still possible. And as I am aware of the fact that a lot of people are moving, I decided to write an article for organizing a move during a global pandemic. As I didn’t want to make this article too long, I decided to focus on one state and it is the state of New Mexico. So, if you are interested in finding out how to organize a move in New Mexico during a global pandemic, you came to the right place as I have some very useful and helpful tips prepared for you.

The current situation in New Mexico regarding coronavirus

Before I start telling you exactly what you need to do in order to organize a move in New Mexico successfully, I want to give you some information about the situation regarding coronavirus in the state of New Mexico. As of now, the number of infected people by the virus is growing and so is the number of deaths caused by the coronavirus. Since March 11th, the state has reported over 1,200 cases as of now. And like I said, this number is sadly only going to continue getting bigger and bigger. Luckily, 235 patients have already recovered. The state of New Mexico is testing people every day and for now, around 4% of the people that were tested were infected. This sounds like a small number but in this case, no number should be considered small. The more this virus spreads, the worse it is going to be.

Where is it still a good idea to move in New Mexico?

Some counties of New Mexico have more infected people than the other counties. In some states, the number is as small as just one or two people who are infected. Even in counties where that is the case, you should still be inside as much as possible and avoid any physical contact with a lot of people. If you live in Bernalillo County, maybe organizing a move right now isn’t the best idea. Bernalillo County is the county with the biggest number of coronavirus patients. So are McKinley County, Sandoval County, San Juan County, and Santa Fe County.

If you currently live in one of these states and you were planning to move within them or you planned on moving to them, maybe postponing your move would be a much smarter thing to do. Now and always, the most important thing is your and your family’s health. Moving to one of these states can be risky for your health because of the large number of infected people. But if you live in one of these counties and you want to relocate to a safer county because of the coronavirus, I suggest moving to one of these counties:

  • Catron County
  • Colfax County
  • Lea County
  • Lincoln County
  • Luna County
  • Roosevelt County
  • San Miguel County.

This is where only one or two patients infected by the virus live. This, of course, doesn’t mean that the virus won’t continue to spread there but for now, these counties are safer than the rest of them. Moving away from counties with a lot of infected people is a good idea but it isn’t going to be easy. You will have to be very careful and you will have to make your moving process last as short as possible. And if you want to learn how to do just that, keep on reading.

Before you decide to move…

There is one thing you definitely need to do before you decide to move. You are going to have to go and get tested for the virus. This way you will make sure that you are not bringing the virus with you to another county. This is necessary for both your and other people’s safety. Thinking about others during this period of time is also very important. You want to be extra careful right now with everything you do. Endangering your health and other people’s health is not something you want to do.

So, if you want to move, you are definitely going to need and get tested to see whether you are positive to the virus or not. If you are positive, moving to a different county is going to be impossible. You are immediately going to be hospitalized. But even if you are not positive to the virus, you will probably have to stay inside of your new home for two weeks. These measures of precaution are necessary and you must follow orders.

Hire a moving company for your New Mexico move

Once you get tested for the virus and they tell you that you can move to a different city or county, you can start planning your relocation. So, what is your next step? You definitely need to hire a moving company that is going to help you relocate. This is going to make your move last much shorter. This is also going to be a much safer way to move for you and your family. Some people are worried that hiring movers can be a bad idea because of the virus. After all, these are people you don’t know and they work with other people you don’t know all the time. But, let me tell you that hiring movers is completely safe and advisable for plenty of reasons.

The movers from a moving company that you hire have surely been tested. They wouldn’t be able to work if they are infected by the virus. Not only that but moving companies that are still operating are doing the best they can to keep their employees and their customers as safe as possible. This means that your moving team is going to be fully prepared and protected for your move. They will all be wearing face masks and gloves that are going to protect you and them from spreading the virus. The trucks that they use will also be disinfected before and after every move they make. These are the necessary measures of precaution. So, if you are planning to move to a new city hassle-free and as fast as possible, hiring movers is the best thing you can do.

What do you need to do to organize a move in New Mexico?

Even though your movers are going to be protected with face masks and rubber gloves, this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be. If you don’t already own these things, you definitely need to find them even before you organize a move in New Mexico. If finding these things is impossible for you, making your own face masks can be a good solution to the problem. There are countless tutorials online on how to make face masks and which materials are best for doing so. As far as gloves go, you must have some cleaning gloves in your home.

If by any chance you don’t, asking your family, friends, and neighbors for these things is a smart thing to do. They might just have some that you could use. And if this plan fails, I am sure that your moving company can provide you with a couple of face masks and gloves for you and your family. Like I said before, it is very important to think about others all the time but during these hard times especially.

But this isn’t the only thing you need in order to stay protected. You also must have disinfecting supplies. And you are going to need a lot of it and I am going to tell you why. This virus sticks to everything. It doesn’t float in the air. It is “heavy” and therefore it falls down on the ground. This is also how the virus spreads. So, it is important that you pay special attention to disinfecting both your old and your new home.

Once you have everything ready, it is time to start packing. While you are packing, make sure that you only bring the things that you really need. Moving unnecessary items isn’t a good idea at all, especially now. Before you start packing, you need to make sure that all the packing supplies that you are using are disinfected. And here are all the packing supplies that you are going to need to move during a global pandemic:

  • Plastic or cardboard boxes – cardboard boxes and cheaper and easier to find but plastic boxes are much easier to carry around and clean. They are also reusable which is good for the environment.
  • Tape and tape dispensers – no matter which type of box you decide to use for your relocation, tape is important for securing them. Tape dispensers are going to make doing this much easier and faster.
  • Bubble pack and packing peanuts – bubble pack is necessary if you have and breakable or delicate items, which I am sure you have. Don’t be shy when using bubble pack, protecting your items is important even when you are packing in a hurry. Use packing peanuts to fill the empty space in boxes so your things don’t tumble around too much.
  • Vacuum bags – packing your clothing in vacuum bags is much better and safer. They are very easy to use and also very convenient.
  • Plastic foil – you are going to need a lot of plastic foil for wrapping your furniture and your boxes. Remember to remove the foil before your movers put your belongings inside of your new home or disinfect the foil well.

Packing tips to organize your move properly

In order to make your packing most efficient, you are going to need some packing tips. And it is exactly what I have prepared for you. One of the best packing tips that I can give you is to pack one room at a time. This is going to make your packing process well-organized and fast. This way, your home won’t be a complete mess while packing. While you are packing, have someone helping you. This is going to make it last even shorter. Remember to also keep a list of things that you have packed and where you packed them. Label your boxes. This will make unpacking easier and more organized. You won’t have to tumble through all the boxes in order to find something you need. While you are packing, make sure that you clean and disinfect everything that you are packing.

If you live in a really big home, your packing process might just last more than a day or two. But if you live in a home that is of regular size, you can pack up in just one day. It is important that you start in the morning and take short breaks when they are necessary. As you can see, to organize a move in New Mexico on short notice, you have to know a lot about moving and packing. And this is about just everything you need to know.

Buy what you need and don’t leave your home

Before even moving to your new home, you should go grocery shopping. Buy food and things that you need for the first two weeks in your new home. You should plan this before you organize a move in New Mexico and have it in mind as an expense you will have to cover. After you move, you should stay at home as much as possible. This is the perfect time to unpack and plan out what you need to purchase for your new home. Remember to always stay safe and to always think about others.
